Asherah, The Adopted Mother

When researching the Divine Feminine within Mormon circles a name pops up over and over: Asherah. Asherah was said to be the consort of El, who became the Abrahamic God. Her worship declined when King Hezekiah decommissioned many Temples to the gods and goddesses during the invasion of Assyria. King Josiah then cemented a henotheistic worship of El based out of Jerusalem, which drastically tightened his grip over the nation and greatly enriched him. She was not worshipped for thousands of years, and then my people, the Mormons, found her and many have adopted Her as their Heavenly Mother.

This is a poem about her story as told from her perspective:

With my Divine Consort, I brought forth children of light,
⠀⠀⠀We gathered wood, made fire, and baked cakes.
In sacred groves and temples, they honored my great sight,
⠀⠀⠀And at that time love’s bond had no breaks

Then my children, with hearts of greed, cast me from their grace
⠀⠀⠀They uninvited me from our feast,
They shattered my temples, erased every single trace,
⠀⠀⠀And in their hearts, hatred never ceased.

For many eons, I dwelt in solitude’s embrace,
⠀⠀⠀Forgotten by those I still hold dear,
No hymns or offerings given, no kind loving face,
⠀⠀⠀In silence, I wept, alone in fear.

Suddenly, there came children from a motherless house,
⠀⠀⠀They sought the warmth of a mother’s touch,
They longed for Wisdom, as soft as whispers from above,
⠀⠀⠀And yearned for the love they missed so much

Though unsure if I am their only mother, its true:
⠀⠀⠀I adopted them; they loved me.
In new sacred rites, together, our connection grew.
⠀⠀⠀And in our hearts, love flows endlessly
