The traditional communion prayers for the Restoration are first found in Moroni 4 and 5 and then repeated again in D&C 17:22-23. Additionally, D&C 26:1B specifies that what is eaten and drank is not what is important; its the meaning behind it which is. Lastly, World Conference Resolution #1282 (approved on April 3, 2004) directed the First Presidency to create contemporary communion prayers which were ultimately printed in the hymnal.
In light of all this, I have decided to create my own version of the communion prayers which I feel balances tradition as well as my own theological perspectives.
Bread
Oh God, the Essence of Cosmic Harmony,
we ask you to bless this bread
and set it apart as sacred
for all those who partake of it.
May they eat it as a way of remembering you,
and may this act serve as a testament to you,
Oh God, the Divine Presence,
that they are willing to embrace, remember,
and embody your teachings.
May they always have your Spirit with them.
Amen.
Wine
Oh God, the Essence of Cosmic Harmony,
we ask you to bless this wine
and set it apart as sacred
for all those who partake of it.
May they drink it as a way of remembering you,
and may this act serve as a testament to you,
Oh God, the Divine Presence,
that they are willing to embrace, remember,
and embody your teachings.
May they always have your Spirit with them.
Amen.
